Find The Best Smartphone: bias or without?

How to choose the best smartphone? By instinct? By talking to friends and family? By asking the salesman? By reading reviews on the internet? Yes, I did all that, but I still haven't made the decision yet. Until few days ago I stumble (is this an outdated term? :P ), I saw this website that do all the comparisons for us.

FindTheBest.com will do the data-driven comparisons for business and finance services, child care to adoption agencies, bicycles to guns, air tickets to hostels, and various consumers electronics including smartphones. So I give a try on the smartphone department.

I am looking for a mid-range smartphone. Probably around RM 1000 to RM 1500 (~US$313 to US$469). Has to be an Android (iPhone is out the range because the pricing). And ICS upgradable, the best is ICS out of the box. So I nailed down to a few, too bad the website don't have Samsung Galaxy S Advance, could because it is not sold at US. Anyway, Samsung Galaxy S 2 vs a few within the price range that I mentioned just now. And I get this:

SmartphonesEMBED

Looks like Samsung Galaxy S 2 has the highest score even though HTC One V and all 3 Sony Xperia are one year newer than Samsung Galaxy S 2.

One thing I noticed while using FindTheBest.com is it said that they are unbiased, data-driven comparisons, however the data are based on reviews from the internet, so it might not always as reliable as we thought. A lot of websites nowadays are being paid by the manufacturers to promote their products. Example iPhone 4 S is 1 point better than Samsung Galaxy S 2 even though so many aspect are worse than Samsung Galaxy S 2.
SmartphonesEMBED

HTC One series are in bad score. I wonder why Samsung Galaxy S 3 ended up at lower score.
SmartphonesEMBED

At the end of the day, it is still back to us to make up own decisions. Reviews and advices are still for reference only. Good luck to me for finding my next smartphone. :)

Here is the Find The Best smartphone department:

Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 3

Okay, it is actually Samsung Galaxy S 3 International version vs Samsung Galaxy S 3 Sprint version. Sprint version as the name have told the clue, it is available for US only.

What is the different between these 2 version? There are 2 main different:
1. International version equipped with quad-core Exynos CPU, while Sprint/US version come with dual-core krait CPU
1. International version equipped with 1GB of RAM, which Sprint/US version come with 2GB of RAM.

See the comparison video made by pocketnow.com.

Looks like there is not much different and the result is not consistent, meaning there is no clear winner here.
For me, I will either choose to buy Samsung Galaxy S 2 or Samsung Galasy S Advanced because their price drop significantly after S 3 came out, so this should be a good time to get them.

Samsung Galaxy S 3 Official TV Commercial at US

Whenever a new smartphone or gadget being launched by another company other than Apple, they will boost about how good is their hardware, software and other services. However usually they rarely connect to the customers. Apple, especially Steve Jobs always did a good job relate the product to the customer.

This Samsung Galaxy S 3 Official TV commercial is really did it. I feel like it is connected to what I need for my next smartphone. Kudos to the team that produce this video.

Probably I should just skip the mid-range smartphone and head to this Samsung Galaxy S 3. What do you think?

Kingdomality: who are you in Medival Kingdom

My friend forwarded me a link to a personality test. She did the questions on the website and have to do a report based on the result. So I just give it a try as well.

Kingdomality was created based on a book called "Kingdomality: An Ingenious New Way to Triumph in Management". Meaning the purpose of the test is to encourage the sales of the book. The result of the test is show who are you in the time of Medieval.

pix source: kingdomality.com

My result is Dreamer-Minstrel. The result will also show the good and bad of each type of the character. You are not necessary to agree to what it is written on your character, but some of them will be true.

pix source: kingdomality.com

Anyway, this is just for your reference only. It would be an interesting topic to talk about for a few days within your office.

Go to this link to take your test:

Remove Empty Directories

The longer we use our PC/laptop, the more files and folders being created and accumulated on the hard disk(s). I always tell myself to do some housekeeping, but where is the time left for that after I use the time for work, family and writing blogs as well as reading 100+ of RSS everyday?

Then I found this. RED is Remove Empty Directories and it is a free apps.

pix source: http://www.jonasjohn.de/red.htm

I downloaded that portable version. After unzip, I execute it directly but some directories cannot be access. So I restart it as administrator, in slightly more than 1min, there are 2241 empty directories has been listed by it. Wow, I can't imagine how I am going to find all of them, unless I do a disk format. :P

Remove Empty Directories also use different icons to describe each of these kinds of dirs:
  • Root
  • the really empty
  • dirs with trash (you have to define what is trash)
  • hidden dirs
  • locked dirs
  • protected dirs
  • Failed (meaning no reading access, I fixed it by run it with administrator permission)
After it listed out the dirs, it is time to review and exclude or protect the dirs you want to keep.
pix source: http://www.jonasjohn.de/red.htm

Remove Empty Directories available as installer or portable version. The author of this apps also very kind to post his coding at internet, so that if you want to use it for other OS(s), you can compile on your own.

To download Remove Empty Directories, go to:

Disable Intel Graphic Automatic Reduce to 40Hz Refresh Rate

Last year I posted a method on how to change Intel Graphic to 60Hz refresh rate, because 40Hz refresh rate sometime can make our eyes very tired after long hours of looking at it.
http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/2011/12/making-intel-graphics-more-comfortable.html

The above method however is not permanent and Intel Graphic and Media Control Panel will eventually automatically change 60Hz refresh rate back to 40Hz. At some forum, someone explained that this is method of slowing down the refresh rate to 40Hz is to reduce the power usage, therefore prolong the battery life. However I don't find it much different with the battery life with both setting. The biggest different with battery life is turning on the WiFi.

Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel at http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/

So what can I do to disable the Intel Graphic and Media Control Panel that automatically reduced refresh rate to 40Hz?

So here is the method:
  1. Open Registry Editor by typing "regedit" with the double quote in the "Search Program and Files" box after click the Windows button. Click Yes if UAC ask the usual question.
  2. Go to this registry key:
    •  HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
  3. Now hit Ctrl+F or select find from the edit menu.
  4. Search for: FeatureTestControl
  5. When you find it, change whatever it currently is to f840 (as hex) or 63552(decimal).
  6. Click OK to save it.
  7. Close Registry Editor and restart. You should noticed that the refresh rate on Intel Graphics and Media Control Panel is always stick with 60Hz refresh rate.
I hope that this tutorial will help you somehow. Happy hacking. :)

Warning: editing registry can be harmful to Windows OS. Please be extra careful, and backup the Windows via Windows Restore or other backup system you use. I am not responsible if your Windows behave strangely or crash due to this registry hacking.

How to reduce FireFox Memory Usage

FireFox is always my favourite since I start to use it a few years back. But the problem with FireFox is it is hogging too much memory. FireFox also is known for the memory leak issue even though on FireFox 13 and even FireFox 14 beta (they said they fixed it but the truth is the truth). Even though I do nothing on FireFox, I can see the memory usage of FireFox keep on growing.

Personally I am not sure how FireFox will crash every now and then on my laptop, it could be Windows7 trying to kill it because it hogging too much memory. I am sure this could be the truth because if I close FireFox and leave Chrome on only, now it is time for Chrome to crash every now and then.

I searched through FireFox add-ons and found a few add-on that claimed to be able to reduce the memory usage of FireFox. I picked Memory Fox, which works as expected. The memory reduced, but not a lot (reduced 20MB, sigh). But I can feel that the FireFox sometimes will lag a bit, even with just typing on blogger.

pic credit: http://www.datum-forensics.com

Then it is like someone can read my mind. Raymond.cc posted Firemin on one of their post and I give it a try and seriously it works. FireFox on my laptop now will always not more than 20M of memory with 10 tabs opened. It might blow up to more than 50M, but FireMin will lower it down.

To download and understand more about this software, go to this link below:
http://www.datum-forensics.com/2012/05/firemin/

So how to use it?
  1. Download it from the link showed above
  2. Run Firemin.exe to extract it to the same dir where firemin.exe at
  3. Look for Firemin folder, and execute (double click) Firemin.exe
  4. Now you have to close FireFox before you can optimize it
  5. After FireFox is closed, look for the Firemin icon at notification area
  6. Right click on the Firemin icon and select Optimize FireFox
  7. Wait for it to complete.
  8. Now open FireFox and load up your 10 or 20 tabs and enjoy surfing.
You can check the memory usage by open Windows Task Manager and look for firefox.exe under Processes tab.

Bear in mind that Firemin is not 100% working all the time. The FireFox eventually will need to be restart, but not as often compare to without Firemin.

Happy FireFox-ing. :)

Waste Time Thursday and MS Surface

Hey, it is waste time Thursday again.

If you know Steve Jobs and Bill Gates and their history of competing each other in the PC and mobile world, you might enjoy it. If not, who cares, just waste your 2 mins and 48 seconds with this video! :D

Btw, MS announced their own tablet, called Surface. Watch the promo video (another waste time video?):

Basically it is just another tablet, but with the external keyboard being embedded into the cover (Apple take note, you might want to improve on this :P)

How To Check Air Pollutant Index for Malaysia

This post is applicable for Malaysia only.

The haze is back. No thanks to open burning at Sumatra island of Indonesia, every year Malaysia and Singapore (and part of Thailand?) will suffer from haze for few months, at some years, it was a few times in a year.

Department of Environment did a good job to put up a webpage so that public can easily look for the Air Pollutant Index. The webpage is called Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS).

pix credit: Department of Environment of Malaysia

The system will be update the index at 7am, 11am and 5pm everyday. At the Google Maps, you can zoom-in to the area that you want to look for. However the reading is not at every location, the readings are being pin at the station that collecting the Air Pollutant reading.

Air Pollutant Index on Outdated Penang Uncle blogspot dot com

So what is API mean? It can be a reference for us to decide should we do outdoor activities or not. For more than 100 API, it is consider unhealthy, and we should stay indoor. For moderate level, the API is between 51 and 100, personally I would consider it is not good to stay outdoor as well. The picture above showing Seberang Jaya, Perai at 101 API, which is at unhealthy level.

API Status
0-50 Good
51-100 Moderate
101-200 Unhealthy
201-300 Very Unhealthy
>301 Hazardous

The link to check Air Pollutant Index Management System (APIMS):
http://www.doe.gov.my/apims/

You can also check the past API record by going to this link:
http://www.doe.gov.my/apims/calender.php

Update: (2013 Jun 24) looks the website links has been updated on DoE website.
Pls go to the main page to get the daily detail report:
http://www.doe.gov.my/webportal/en
It is very slow on all the pages related to Air Pollutant Index.
The best advice is to stay indoor as much as you can, avoid outdoor activities. If you can smell the burning haze smell, meaning it is relatively harmful to human.
The air filter sellers should be laughing right now.
I have tried this link again, it is working now:

ICS Launcher for Gingerbread and Froyo

One of the problem with smartphone is the hardware will be outdated much faster than software. For PC or laptop or desktop, usually we can use for at least 3 to 5 years until it is really slow, but for smartphone the apps and OS upgrade force users to change to a new phone in less than 3 year or most of the time 2 years. Apple in that other hand have a new iPhone every year, so you must buy a new iPhone every year to enjoy the full goodness of new iOS.

Luckily for Android users that there are always developers that write very nice interface or theme or launch for others user to enjoy and most of the time they are free!

The Launcher that I going to show here is Holo Launcher, which looks very similar with ICS (Ice Cream Sandwich, a.k.a Android 4.0). In fact it is based on Android 4.0.4 Launcher, so you will get the same feel.

pic credit: Google Play

Some of Holo Launcher features:
  1. Full ICS Style
    • ICS Icons, Folders, Outlines, Drawer Tabs, etc.
  2. Custom Desktop Pages/Grid
    • Up to 9 desktop pages and 10 x 10 grid.
  3. Custom Drawer Portrait/landscape Grid
    • Set different drawer grid for portrait and landscape screen.
  4. Scrollable Dock
    • Up to 7 icons per page and up to 3 pages.
  5. Infinite Scrolling
    • Loop through your desktop/drawer/dock continuously.
  6. Desktop Previews
    • Pinch to access desktop previews.
  7. Backup and Restore
    • Backup and restore your settings and shortcuts.
  8. Other Customization Options
    • Keep in memory, home key action, hide labels, etc.

One of the thing I like about Holo Launcher is no root required. Some people might prefer to stay away from rooting their Android, so this is the apps for you. Just download, install, configure and you are good to go.

To download from Google Play, go to this link:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mobint.hololauncher

If you prefer to download directly:

Holo Launcher Beta APK

You can also help to translate Holo Launcher to your language:

The Ultimate Boss Key or Boss Mode

Many of us works in office or factory or lab or whatever place, except at home. Some of the time we like to check FB status of friends, wish friends happy birthday, or do some online banking such as transfer money and pay credit card and bills. Or maybe just watching a funny youtube video that your friend sent you the link a moment ago.
And we wish that no one would appear suddenly at our back and see whatever we are doing on the laptop or desktop or workstation.

Boss Mode on Outdated Penang Uncle blogspot dot com

Usually we will try to minimize the windows by clicking the minimize icon on top right of the windows using mouse, but that might be too late to hide whatever you are doing. Some web browser such as Maxthon has boss key or boss mode that you can immediately hide the Maxthon from the taskbar. But how about other web browser or windows? Sure you can use Windows+m to minimize everything, but what if your boss need you to show him some result on some windows or excel or VNC, the Windows' Aero Peek would exposed whatever you were doing because Windows+m does not hide windows from taskbar.

Clicky Gone can help in this situation. After you download it and install/unzip it, you can either use the default shortcut key or customized your own combination. Practice the shortcut key for a few times and you are good to go.

Another good thing about Clicky Gone is you can mute the computer sound for Boss Mode. Therefore your boss will not able to notice if you were on youtube. :P

Actually Clicky Gone is not written for the intention of hiding stuffs from boss, but it helps to hide windows that you are not sure at the moment, make your windows cleaner and easier to work.

Another thing I can think of is during presentation. You can hide most of the windows and leave the powerpoint and a few windows that are needed during the presentation. After you finish the presentation and go back at home, you can bring back others windows back, without need to reopen everything all over again. :)

To download Clicky Gone, go to this link:
http://clickygone.sourceforge.net/

Clicky Gone also available in portable version

(Almost) Shopping with Lazada (Social Media Failed)

If you are surfing internet from Malaysia, you probably have noticed lately that almost all the Google Ads you seen on all websites, including international websites, are Lazada ads (ladies might seen Zalora, the online fashion site, under same company with Lazada). Lazada and Zalora are new Amazon clone that started by Samwer Brothers from German. Samwer Brothers operating model (I heard only ya) has always been clone famous online business from US and implement on other countries that don't have the similar online business. So they has been very successful.

With the all-in effort (seems like) in Malaysia by Lazada, I think a lot of Malaysian knows about it by now. And the price are very competitive, well, at least for the smartphones that I am looking for recently. I was almost wanted to order for Samsung Galaxy S 2 because after discount and voucher, it is selling at RM1169 (~US$368) only! My friend has bought the very same phone at shop for RM1550 (~US$488) few weeks ago. That is RM381 or more than US$100 cheaper at Lazada.

However after some research (Google, what else?), there is a little bad comment on the internet or forum (including Cari and Lowyat which are the mostly use forum in Malaysia), except Lazada Philippines which was being complained about the bad services. So I was getting a bit worry.

Then I found FB page of Lazada Malaysia. There are mixed comments with bad ones appear more than the good ones. Just now I found the best (worst) comments. I think that person is very frustrated, therefore he posted about 6 or 7 of same comment on the FB page. However when I want to take a snapshot of it, it left one only, the rest probably being deleted by the page admin.

Lazada FB page comment on Outdated Penang Uncle blogspot dot com

Checking other comment, some are left without any response for days. And I (almost) decided not to buy from this website, because I don't want to get too much trouble just to save a few hundreds. If there is any problem, the money should be able to return to me, but the troubles and worries is not worth of the money that I might be saved.

In the summary, if you want to have a FB page of your business, make sure there is one person who properly manage it. FB page can be your biggest helper or bigger loser for your business. Well, Lazada is not making profit out of me, for now. :)

Update: Jul 2, 2012 - looks like there are more and more frustrated customers on Lazada's facebook page.

MacBook Pro with Retina Display Teardown

After some many rumors running around the internet for few months regarding retina display coming to MacBook, it is finally here. And iFixIt quickly have their hand on this new MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

The verdict of the teardown? 1 out of 10, meaning you are 99% cannot repair it on your own. Well, iFixIt might come out with some wacky tutorial that help the repair. In the mean time, why not just look at what is inside a MacBook Pro with Retina Display.

What is Green Browser?

The actual name for this browser is GreenBrowser, without the space.

Written by a Chinese (again? Maxthon and Avant are also written by Chinese), GreenBrowser is very similar to first generation of Maxthon, which was called MyIE at that time.

I think the main objective of GreenBrowser is to replace Internet Explorer. As we know that the limitation of all IE, until IE8. I haven't try IE9, so no comment on IE9. GreenBrowser is running on top of the IE engine, therefore it will not be anything faster than IE.

At GreenBrowser's website, it claimed it is a fastest and lightest web browser. However during my testing, the speed still feels like using IE. The only different is you can have a lot of stuffs/feature just like Maxthon/FireFox/Chrome/etc. Other things that I noted are:
1. The nuffnang ads on my blog is not loaded. I tried another blog if mine, but still the same.
2. Some of the embedded youtube video looks like not added correctly although other browsers looks okay.
3. McAfee detected one of the GreenBrowser plug-in when I unzip the portable version.
GreenBrowser plug-in detected as virus on Outdated Penang Uncle blogspot dot com

What I like about GreenBrowser is it has official portable version (just like Opera), therefore we don't need to worry too much if we downloaded a portable version that is might have trojan.[oppsss... except for the plug-in being detected by McAfee as trojan :P]

Summary, GreenBrowser is just a another browser that might suite your surfing needs. I still stick with Chrome and FireFox for now and GreenBrowser will be just another backup browser that I always have (Opera, and Maxthon) :)

iOS6 announced by Apple

So what? I will continue support Android. Of course I am still using my HTC Touch which running on Windows Mobile! I am still looking for a new Android phone with the right price. Sorry, no SGS3, no HTC One X, no even close to SG Note. My price range is RM 1k (~US$314), that's all.

Have you noted that iOS interface since iOS one until iOS6 still looks the same? Of course, there are folders and notification. But yawn, iOS still looks the same, unless you jailbreak it and install something fancy like my brother which make every icon spin whenever you flip the page.

iOS6, so what?

Basic Magic Wand

If the author of Harry Potter was writing the very same series of Harry Potter books at Middle Age of Europe, she probably being burned by church. However in nowadays, Harry Potter is just being a commercial product, being from books, DVD, BD, theme park (yes, there are a few Harry Potter theme parks), and many fake magic stuffs that you seen on the Harry Potter movies, that you can buy at Amazon.

Magic, probably just a really working stuffs that Churches that dislike during the middle age. It is because most of the people don't understand it. Just like voodoo , black magic, gong tau (known in South East Asia), which normal people don't understand, probably these magic are being teach by alien at thousands or millions years back, until they being control by Men-in-Black. :P

okay, okay, enough with that. Now there is a working wand that can be use by anyone that don't understand magic or never attended Hogwarts' summer school.

You can actually order it here:

Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S

Mr Miniman from pocketnow.com is finally come out and do a comparison video. This time is Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S. At last, I can relax, sit back and enjoy the comparison video without need to worry about accent. :P
Don't believe me, watch this video:http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/2012/06/samsung-galaxy-s-3-vs-htc-one-x.html

Anyway, let watch video made by Mr Miniman. Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S

Once again, there is a jump list if you don't want to watch the whole video. [My comment in square bracket]
0:25 - boot up comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [Samsung Galaxy S 3 is the winner here, duh!]
1:10 - hardware comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [just check at gsmarena for better and side-by-side comparison]
3:40 - day-to-day apps comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [different OS with slightly different apps (the code of the apps definitely different)]
5:45 - browser comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [no advantage of quad core on Samsung Galaxy S 3]
8:40 - dictation comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 (S Voice) vs iPhone 4S (Siri)
10:00 - screen comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [I like the colors on Samsung Galaxy S 3]
13:13 - youtube comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [iPhone 4S looks like a cheap tiny video player from ShenZhen beside Samsung Galaxy S 3, wait a minute, iPhone 4S is assembled at ShenZhen, whatever :P]
14:00 - grand theft auto comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S [yawn]
19:04 - 1080p video comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs iPhone 4S

Again, this is no apple-to-apple comparison. Apple fan boys, iPhone 5 is coming soon! I will continue waiting for my mid-range smartphone with ICS to come out. :)

Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2

What do you think whenever people compare you with your more successful brother or sister? Not nice right? No one would like it. Therefore in this comparison video, it is not a fair fight. However it is good to know that if you prefer to get Samsung Galaxy S 2 now because it is much cheaper now.

To save some of your time (even though I tag this as waste time post :P), here is a jump list [my comment in the square bracket]:
1:00 - start screen of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2
2:08 - hardware comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2 [check gsmarena for better comparison!]
3:40 - comparison of opening day-to-day apps on Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2
4:40 - comparison of browser speed for Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2 [once again, he forgot to scroll up and down during loading! okay, he remembered at later part][Samsung Galaxy S 2 is comparable to Samsung Galaxy S 3, not bad!]
7:35 - benchmarking apps [skip this for non-geek, not a fair fight anyway]
11:00 - grand theft auto III comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2 [yawn]
15:00 - youtube video comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2
15:50 - speedtest.net comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs Samsung Galaxy S 2

For day-to-day apps usage, there is not much different between Samsung Galaxy S 3 and Samsung Galaxy S 2. If you are not any hardcore multi-tasking smartphone user, Samsung Galaxy S 2 might be a best deal for you now. Samsung Galaxy S 2 is selling at RM1550 (bargain) to RM1699 (Samsung official) [~US$487 to ~US$525] at the moment. This is without any data/call plan from telco provider.

Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X

I wonder what is Mr Miniman doing in pocketnow.com? Where is he? Almost all the phone review and phone comparison are worked by his associates nowadays and boy, not to criticize their accent, but I can't help to notice it whenever I watch the video from pocketnow.com. Please listen to BBC radio more often and try to reduce your accept, pretty please? :P

Anyway, pocketnow has put up head-to-head comparison video of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X (warning: accent is heavy :P):

To save some of your time (even though I tag this as waste time post :P), here is a jump list [my comment in the square bracket]:
0:53 - the start screen of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [HTC One X with fast boot, so HTC One X is the winner here]
1:30 - spec comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [go to gsmarena for better comparison]
3:25 - comparison of opening day-to-day apps on Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [boring]
5:10 - running benchmarking apps for Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [these are for geeks only]
8:07 - browser comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [he forgot to scroll up and down during loading! that's how we use the phone]
11:00 - grand theft auto III comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [skip skip skip]
13:45 - screen comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [I like color on Samsung Galaxy S 3 better, but it is up to personal preference]
16:39 - video camera quality comparison of Samsung Galaxy S 3 vs HTC One X [Samsung Galaxy S 3 color is better!]

In summary, it is up to personal preference to pick which one the winner. HTC supporters sure will pick HTC One X and Samsung hardcore will pick Samsung Galaxy S 3. For me, I will go to mid-range phone because that is where I think the money worth for. :P

Make Your Own Portable Software

Portable software or portable apps is always my favorite. At anytime I have more than 100 portable apps on my PC. The best thing about portable apps are there is no installation needed, just download, unzip and you are ready to use it. Portable apps also will not mess with your file system, unless you allow it to do it. Unlike installed software for example real player is the most stubborn software that likes to take over system setting without user's consensus.

Since USB thumb drive is relatively cheap nowadays, it is very convenient to put all the apps into a thumb drive and run on any PC or laptop that you wanted to.

With so much of the advantages of portable apps, why not make some of your own? For those paid software, I would think as long you don't distributed it, use it on your own, it should not be fine because you already pay for it.

Cameyo is the software that I am talking about.

They even made a step-by-step instruction, therefore I am just going to skip this part.

Shake to Charge Smartphone?

As we know that there are some watches that being charge by shaking it. HTC has came out the idea to let smartphone users to charge their smartphone by shaking it. I am not sure how fast or how many times you have to shake it to recharge for every 10%, but this might be a good start. :P

Unlock locked files

Have you bump into a problem when trying to do some house keeping on your PC/laptop harddisk, but there is a warning message said that there is a process is using the file, or the file is locked because blah blah blah? For advanced users, you might able to figure it out how to fix this. But how about the rest of 90% of us?

Fear not, LockHunter can help us.
pix credit: http://lockhunter.com/

LockHunter has to be install, not suitable to be portable because it need to integrate with the system. There should be a way to do this with portable version, but that is beyond the scope for this post.

When you want to move or delete a file and the system flag an error, then just right-click on the file and click on "What is locking this file?". LockHunter will then report the problem.

There are a few options with the locked file:
  1. Unlock the file only
  2. Close the Locking Processes (a.k.a kill) that locked the file
  3. Delete the Locking Processes

By default, LockHunter will delete any file into recycle bins, therefore it is much safer so that you can retrieve it from recycle bins in case you mistakenly deleted a file/apps/exe.

Supports Windows only (Win2k to Win7), available for 32 and 64 bits. Still in beta stage, so it might be buggy. And it is free!

To download this useful apps, go to here:

Banana Piano

Yes, you can make a banana piano with a piece of hardware, some crocodile clips, and a Mac. No software is required. You can even turn the same thing into a joypad for playing Mario, with some additional play-doh and a paper note pad.
An invention by MaKey MaKey, a new startup, you can actually order this board now from them.

A pcb, with some connectors and Arduino chips, this thing really works.
