Live Traffic Update for Malaysia Google Maps in Penang

Google Malaysia has been doing good job by bring into Malaysia many features that we always see only in developed countries, for example Google Maps.

I remember it was not too long ago that live traffic available in Penang. After Google bought Waze, now Google Maps with Waze update also available for Penang!

Head to Google Maps now and turn on the Traffic by moving your mouse cursor to the search box and click on the "Live traffic". You can even check on the "Typical traffic" for any of the in a week and at specific time. I would say it is not so accurate for the "Typical traffic" but it is a very good reference to avoid traffic jam at specific hour at the places you want to explore.

Have fun!

MacBook Pro 13" Retina Display Late 2013 Teardown

Hopefully this is the last of teardown week in Penang Uncle blog. haha. Teardown in Penang Uncle

If you want to evaluated Apple as a parent, it will fail big time. Because Apple don't know how name their babies, I mean product. Even lazy people in Western world will give a "junior" to new born babies if they are too lazy to find a name for the babies. But Apple don't even bother to give a new name. Just iPhone, and iPad, and iPod. then new iPhone, new iPad, new iPod. Arghhhh.

iPhone 5c and iPhone 5s Teardown

Looks Apple is starting to follow the path the Samsung took, that to create variant product based on flagship product. Too bad Samsung didn't patent this strategy, otherwise Apple will be sued again by Samsung, haha. Why I said Apple is following Samsung? Because of iPhone 5c.

iPhone 5c teardown actually showing that iPhone 5c is sharing same spec with iPhone 5. One user on Engadget China commented that iPhone 5c is actually repackaging of iPhone 5 that stuck in warehouse for too long. hahah.

Anyway, here is what is inside iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c.

Free 50GB from AT&T Locker

Looks like there are more and more companies jump on this online storage wagon even though it is a red ocean. US largest telco, AT&T is the new member of this online storage.

All free users of AT&T Locker should be getting 5GB only, but no file size limit. If register now, you can get free upgrade to 50GB permanently until AT&T change their mind. There is no limit to AT&T users only. I am not in US and not AT&T subscriber and I still getting the 50GB.

So how to get the free 50GB?

1. Register at AT&T Locker
https://locker.att.net/app/

2. Wait for the confirmation email to reach your inbox/gmail/etc. Click on the link in the email to activate your AT&T Locker account. Check the spam folder if you can't find it in the inbox after a while.

3. After the confirmation done, click on "Account Setting" on top right side [next to "Logout"].

4. Click on "My Plan" to expand the menu. Be patient, it might take a while to refresh. [Some might getting email address not being confirm yet, go back to Step 2].

5. You should see "Current Plan" is 5GB only. Click on the button "Upgrade Plan".

6. Click on the "50GB Limited Time Offer", click "Continue", wait for it [coz it is slow], and click "Confirm" or "Okay" or something like that [coz I forgot what was it :P]

7. Go back to "Account Setting" and click "My Plan" again, you should see 50GB now.

The AT&T Locker home page never mention how long this offer last, so act now to secure another free 50GB of online storage. :)

p/s: mobile apps available for iOS and Android. Search for AT&T Locker in apps store.

p/s 2: the service still new, so expect to have bugs from time to time.

Share your files with Shared.com

Even though blue ocean concept has been around for many years, but most of the people or companies still like to go for red ocean concept. Why do I say that? Because all of the cloud storage service companies, all of them are almost the same. The 2 different things are the amount of storage for free account and mobile/desktop apps availability.

Shared.com is another cloud storage service. The different from the rest are:
1. 100GB for free account [this is really good, because mega.co.nz only 50GB for free account]
2. 2GB file size limit [mega.co.nz offers unlimited but some older browser has memory limit]
3. Get to see lots of ads on free account [not really an advantage unless you really like ads]

update Aug 02, 2013: there was a time limit of free upgrade to 1TB for 6 months, however I was too late to grab it. How about you?

DiGi latest joke?

Saw a friend in FB sharing a link to DiGi, so I just check it out since it is a telco promotion.

Looks like it is a joke from DiGi, because Samsung Galaxy Note (not Note 2, but Note only!) is listed with RRP RM1999 and if you bundle with the 68 smartplan, you still need to pay RM699 for SGN! Come, who would buy SGN now? Again, this is not Note 2 but Note!

Check out this link:

MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013 Teardown

Want to see what is inside a MacBook Air 13" Mid 2013? Read the iFixIt's latest installment. Apple has been very successful in super thin and slim laptop, and I believed Apple will continue that. However Apple's iPhone, or iOS to be more specific, is going to wrong direction with features which copied from Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry.

Or you can read it on iFixIt website:

[free apps] CPU Spy Reborn

Wonder how is the CPU on your phone is being use? Do you really need a quad core or octa core on your new smartphone? Are your smartphone really sleep when you ask it to sleep? CPU Spy is a good apps to do the job. Yes, I am a geek, I always like to know what is going on inside my laptop and phone, I found this apps from XDA forum.

This apps is not exactly new concept, the original apps has been around for 2 or 3 years on XDA and Google Play. But the interface of the original apps was not keep up to date with Android OS. So Mirko Dimartino got the permission of the CPU Spy to re-create the apps.

Head to XDA forum thread for feedback (if you have any):

How to Store Other Stuffs on Flickr

As soon as Flickr announced the free space upgraded to 1TB,  people start to think what else we can store on Flick, in which I already mentioned that in my earlier post:
http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/2013/05/flickr-is-now-1tb.html

Within 1 or 2 days, Reddit user rlaw68 posted the method that we can use on Windows, which is to hide any file behind a picture. Read about the detail at Reddit link below:
http://redd.it/1et454

That method is something similar that I used to transfer files across the pacific ocean. Since each sftp has it's cap speed, so I split a 1GB file into smaller chunks and transfer it with 10 xterms, there are a lot of manual works, but it is so much better to wait for an hour plus. With my method, I can transfers the 1GB from Penang to California within 10 to 15 minutes. Sometimes I have a dir with many more sub-dirs that is also more than 1GB, what I did was tar it, zip it and split it. After the files has been sftp to another side, just use cat to combine back the file, unzip and untar. Everything can be done within 20 minutes. Some other engineers didn't know this method, so they always ended up waiting one whole day just to transfer a 1GB tar file from Penang to California. If they have one week to complete the work, they used up 20% just to transfer file (1 week is 5 working days).

Back to this storing other files on Flickr, I tried it with hiding behind a gif file and also tried on jpg, both has been flag as error b Flickr. After a few times of trial and errors, I realized that maybe Windows is the problem. (Win7 64bit btw).

Since I have cygwin (a linux command prompt on Windows), so I switch to use cygwin, using the same method, but now is on cygwin, not Windows' command prompt. With just one attempt, it works! Flickr recognized it as the gif file and downloading it back prove that the file still can be use. There was another post on the wild wild web which was for MacOS. I would think MacOs would work, because MacOS is based on linux anyway.

So here is the method:

1. Install cygwin if you don't have it on your Windows. [It will be a long and painful process, download the setup file and run the setup file, wait for the setup file to download more file, but it was worth the waiting because I can run many file processing scripts on my Windows the way I wanted to on linux. ]
www.cygwin.com

2. Open cygwin, cd to the dir you want to hide the file behind the gif or jpg.

3. Do this command:
$ cat cover.gif Testing.zip > Testing.gif

4. Upload it to Flickr, and Flickr is happily show it as a picture file.

Done.

When you want to retrieve the file, click on the picture, choose to download original size of this photo. After the file is downloaded, open it with 7zip or WinRAR. WinZip will not works, which is why I have been using 7zip so many years that 7zip is the first software to install on every new Windows. To be exact, I don't install it, I just copied it from back up because it is portable!

Good luck!

Flickr is now 1TB

Yup, 1TB (terabytes), not GB. Unlike box.com or adrive.com which offers the best free 50GB free space, Flickr is now 1TB, that is 20 times of box.com or adrive.com free account. And it is free. Either old or new users, everyone now get 1TB.

I wonder if I can convert Flickr to store other types of file. You know what I mean.

Before Flickr revised the rules, free users can only upload 300MB per month, so it will take like like 278 years to fully use up the 1TB. Luckily now Flickr has unlimited upload of max picture size of 200MB and video up to 1GB.

For my 1M Streamyx broadband package, if I would fully use the line for upload photos only, it will take 180 days to used up the 1TB.
1TB = 1,000GB = 1,000,000MB = 1,000,000,000kB
Max upload speed = 64kB
1000000000kB/64kB = 15625000 seconds = 260,416 minutes = 4340 hours = 180 days

Meaning I will never used up the 1TB. But yahoo already win, because it will attract users back to Flickr.

If you already have yahoo account, just use yahoo account to login.

Jolla Phone which is running on Sailfish OS that is based on Meego OS. Meego OS was abandoned by Nokia and Intel years ago, but the develop team didn't give up and continue the development, now it is time for Sailfish OS to take off.

Sailfish OS should be able to run Android apps, but does it support Google Play? I doubt so, so probably have to get the apk files from other sources.

There is another tease video, which hide about split screen:

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Teardown

Samsung Galaxy S4 teardwon was being posted last month based on a teardown done by a Chinese website:
http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/2013/03/samsung-galaxy-s-4-teardown.html
This teardown is not as complete as by iFixIt. So here goes the Samsung Galaxy S4 Teardown by iFixIt:

Samsung Galaxy S4 has scored 8/10 by iFixIt because it has removable battery and easy to open. Even though there are reviews or comparison reviews between S4 and HTC One, and mostly praised the HTC One of the build quality, but I hate it when a product being designed such that it cannot be repair at all. So if you ask me which one to choose, I still pick S4 even though of the plastic body. Metal or plastic body, eventually most users will put on another protective plastic or silicon cover, so such a waste with un-repairable design of HTC One.

As usual, if you like to view it on iFixIt website, here is the link:

How Secure is Your Password?

What are the password that mostly people would use?
Here is a infographic to show you:
http://outdatedpenanguncle.blogspot.com/2012/10/infographic-password.html

Anyway, how do we check for the password that we use is safe enough?

I used this website:
http://howsecureismypassword.net/

In my opinion, as long as the password need 1 years plus to crack, it should be good enough. To be more safe, just make sure you always change the password every few months.

But since changing password every few months need a lot of effort especially everyone has more than 10 accounts like emails, banking, works, blogs, etc etc, I use keepass to keep all my password.

Keepass is available on Android, iOS, PC, Windows, Linux, and many more platform.

[Free Game] Opposite Sheep Checkers

There are too many free games in Google Play nowadays. Some are good, I mean really good and addictive. But most of the time many are not as good as I expected. Therefore, I have developed a method determine if I wanted to install an apps from Google Play or not. Check it out:

For this games that I wanted to share today, I am convinced that I will play this game for a very long time. Watch this video:

How to determine Quality of Android Apps

For those that would prefer not to be too risky with Android Apps, this post is for you.

Even though I subscribed to news from XDA, there are a lot more apps that being posted at many more forum. I would like to try them out, but would not like to mess up with my SGS2.

Usually I would like to try new apps on my SGS2, however I have a set of rules to determine should I try the apps or not.

1. If you are getting an apps from other forums, check on Google Play first if there is free version available. Google Play is the trusted source of apps or apk. There are trusted forums, but we cannot confirm all the posted apk are safe.

2. Second point for consideration is to look at "Average rating". Unless I am very interested with the apps, I will just skip anything that is less than 4.0 rating.

3. The third one to look at is "User Reviews". There are reasons why user would give a 1 star or 2 star.

4. The forth one that always make or break is how many percent of users gave 1 star out of total users that gave review. Example for this apps, there is about 19.9% users gave 1 star! This is one of the apps we should avoid!

I have listed out the steps for searching quality Android apps, hope that you can have a reference to find your favourite apps. :-)

HTC One Teardown

HTC always make good smartphones, however some blamed the marketing department for not doing the job. I am agree to certain extent. For example, HTC launched HTC One X, One X+, One VX, One S, One V way way before this "HTC One". When I saw the news of the launch, I am sure I have this pass through my mind for 0.0001 second, which is "WTF?".
Apple have iPhone, iPhone 2, iPhone 3, iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, and iPhone 5.
Samsung have Samsung Galaxy S, Samsung Galaxy S2, Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S4.
You see what I mean? The brand name of HTC One is like a step back which is a sad thing, because it supposedly do or die for HTC.

Anyway, enough for blah blah blah. iFixIt has given 1/10 for HTC One, that is the first time iFixIt gave 1/10 for smartphone, which mean you can never repair a HTC One.

As usual, if you prefer to read it on iFixIt, here is the link:

BlackBerry Z10 Teardown

BlackBerry Z10 is the flagship device that BlackBerry hope to get gain back some SmartPhone market which it is losing quickly to Samsung and Apple. Will it able to do it? Time will tell. Before this, lets look at what is inside of BlackBerry Z10. iFixIt gave 8/10 for Z10 of repairability, which is quite good, meaning it is easy to be fix.

Here we go:

As usual the link to iFixIt website as below:
BlackBerry Z10 Teardown

Actually I was convinced that this Z10 could be my next device after seeing this video:

Samsung Galaxy S 4 Teardown

Even though Samsung have just announced Samsung Galaxy S 4 couple hours ago, a Chinese website managed to get hold of SGS4 (should be sample or engineering unit) and give it a teardown. The info they have on each IC is not as good as iFixIt, but still good to look inside of this SGS4 right?

Ready or not, here we go:
[in square bracket is confirmed data or something that I wanted to say]

1. Teardown of SGS4 [ta~da~!]

2. Some crack on the plastic back on this engineering unit of SGS4.

3. Dual SIM, and microSD slot. This unit is a 16GB version.

To prevent this post hogging the main page, click "read more" to check the rest of the teardown.

They Know What You Watching

We might have watched some crappy youtube video which was recommended by a friend, or a youtube link on Facebook, or recommended by youtube, or just a random video showed by youtube. We might have thought that no body would know about it.

WRONG!

As long as you are login to google account on any of the browser and whatever youtube video that you watched is being recorded in the history of your youtube account.

What's wrong with it? No body going to check the history, you might thought.

WRONG!

What if you borrow your computer or laptop to your family or friends or your children?
What if your friend need to use your Android or iPhone or WP or BB or whatever to check their emails or twitter or something else.
By chance they might have open up an youtube video that their friends shared with them and then they click on your youtube history.

Anyway, I might have sound too paranoid, most of the people watched what most of the people watch on youtube. So life goes on. Or is it?

Your choice after all.

Last week one of my external harddisk crashed, all the youtube video that I downloaded for my kids are gone. I have tried recuva and testdisk, I even run testdisk on Linux (boot from USB), too bad unable to fix it. I managed to recover some of them using photorec, but problem with photorec is it does not copy the files into the same file name, they are just some numbers, which was very frustrated.

So I go back to youtube history, look for the videos that I watched, and download again the videos that my kids like to watch, include PSY Oppa Gangnam Style. They still like it, what can you do?

To check your youtube history:
  1. Open the youtube if you haven't open it
  2. Click on your username, on top right side. A list of boxes show up, such as favorites, Watch Later, Likes, History, and your channels.
  3. Click on History and you can find all videos that you watched and you might find some of them that you think you never watch, but you did. HAHAHA.
  4. There is an option to delete all of the history or pick some of them and remove them.

Summary, it is very easy to find out what you have watched on youtube. Unless you always use Incognito on Chrome or InPrivate on IE8, or some other private mode on other browsers which is very unlikely.
